Reckon Font design / In progress
A display font that combines the graphic nature of both blackletter and heavy, condensed sans-serif type. This combination creates a system of characters that bring the gothic feel of blackletter into the more contemporary context.
Round 1
When I first began the designing process, I started very safe and leaned heavily into the condensed sans-serif form langauge. As I continued to work on it, I introduced more and more elements of blackletter and the font really started to gain a presence.
Round 1 / Poster
For the final poster of the first round, I chose language from Dracula and Nosferatu. I wanted to use words and text that supported the bold nature of the font and worked well with the calligraphic inspiration. At the end of this process, there was a lot that I loved but there were still elements that I wanted to work on.
Round 2
I took several months away from the font so that I could come back to it with fresh eyes. When I started working on it again, I set out to fix some of the inconsistencies and elements I did not like as well as introduce new weights. I wanted to create a more complete font that gave the user more design flexibility.
Character Set
The font has 5 total weights; 3 that I designed (regular, bold, and thin) and two that I created using Glyphs’ interpolation and generation features (light and black). The light and black are still in progress and I am working toward building out more symbols, punctuation, and glyphs for all the weights.
