FEM Editorial design / identity system
A conceptual magazine series that explores unique views femininity through the lenses of 3 fashion designers; Elena Velez, Sohee Park, and Rui Zhou. Each issue contains the work of the designers as well as related essays and articles that build upon the perspective of the artist.
Full SeriesThe issues all feature a unqiue design language that compliments the aesthetics of the designer and embodies the concept that femininity is diverse. I designed the covers so that when stacked with each other, the issue number and the designer’s name could always be seen.
Issue 1 / Velez
The first issue focuses on the power and resilience of women. I used typography to emulate the brutal and raw style in Elena Velez’s fashion designs and represent the power of the female experience. I purposely pushed the type toward the gutters and the paper’s edge to convey the same uncomfortable feeling that Velez displays.
Issue 2 / Sohee
The second issue centers around a more traditional view of femininity that is present in Sohee Park’s elegant fashion. I implemented drawings of flowers and a collage-esc image style that are a reference to Park’s design process. I kept the headline type in lowercase to reflect the more friendly and graceful nature of the garments.
Issue 3 / Zhou
The final issues focuses on embracing differences and body confidence. I used a typeface that has a variety of weights and styles in order the embody this concept visually. The high contrast serifs of the type also pays homage to the streched cloth that is a staple in Rui Zhou’s fashion designs.
Posters
I expanded the design systems of the publications into a set of posters that promoted the magazines as well as the exhibiton that accompanied their release. I used a combination of new designs as well as reinterpreted moments from within the issues.
Social Media
I brought the system into a smaller scale through a social media page. I used the grid format to create scale within the page that refelcted the shapes of the magazines. I also used After Effects to create animated logo reveals for each of the issues that would
